I have to agree. I was having a similiar problem in my E30 and looked at the ignition system first. Plugs were way out of spec and the wires were baked and adding a whole bunch of resistance. Anyways, without changing anything else I increased my fuel consumption to 30+ mpg on my 318 and it runs much much better. At the moment it is sitting on 10.5 l/100 km which is a combination of town and some freeway driving. My Wife behind the wheel and that figure tends to climb though! We filled up her 320i the other day and she went for a few drives with it - consumption was showing 11.4 l/100 km.
