I was pleasantly surprised. At 19m distance from the charts, the RF 2x performs far better on the 100-500mm than does the EF 2xTC on the 100-400mm II. The 100-500mm at 1000mm produced crisp lines, and gave 40% more resolution than the bare lens and about 20% more than the 100-500mm at 700mm.

Re: 400mm DO II vs 500mm F/4 II. I've used both quite a bit. My experience suggests very similar IQ (with a slight edge to the 500) using the bare lens and the 1.4x III. Using the 2x III I have found the 400 DO II does take a noticeable IQ hit and the 500 has a pretty good edge in IQ at least wide open.

Wondering if anyone has experience with these options or has seen any reviews and comparisons. I have the EF 100-400 Mk2 and 1.4 extender and it works pretty well on my 7D2, but when I get my R5 I want the extra reach. Just not sure what compromises each will have compared to the other, and there is no way I can afford the Big White route.
