Whathappens next is that the engine cools down and your needle starts to drop towards 1/4. By the time it gets down to 1/4 on the gauge your engine is able to keep the cabin fully heated (by stealing some of the heat being produced by the engine at idle) but not able to bring itself back to normal operating temperature.

Itis very easy to get to. You should see it behind the front bumper on the lower, left (driver's) side of the center grill. If you are having trouble finding it, I can send you a picture of mine. I'm pretty sure the sensor was inexpensive. I think it was around $20 or $25, but that was a while ago.
